The SVoD Opportunity – what you need to know
By Published On: June 28, 2019 - Categories: Industry Insights OTT
Last week we gathered an invitation-only audience of senior media professionals in London to explore the opportunities in subscription video (SVoD). We were joined by the likes of ITV, News UK, Channel 4, The Telegraph and more to uncover how best to monetise video assets with SVoD strategies and platforms.
To explore real-life case studies, we heard from Paul Lewis, Head of Live Services at the BFI and Alastair White, CEO at British Pathé. They were kind enough to share how they launched their successful online video services, BFI Player and British Pathé TV.
SVOD Case Studies
Paul and Alastair revealed how these leading British media brands use online video to build new revenue streams, how they avoid pitfalls and where they are heading. The conversations covered OTT strategy, such as how to build an audience and establish a niche, as well as the practical and technical aspects, such as sourcing content and managing platforms, websites and apps.
We were treated to insights into BFI Player’s journey from its inception to launch, and how it has evolved from a free and pay-per-view offering to take advantage of subscriptions. We also discovered what how British Pathé learnt in launching and relaunching their service, and how they target niches to connect their vast archive of historic content with specialist audiences.
Achieving with SVOD
StreamAMG’s Hugo Sharman explained what the rapid global growth in SVoD really means for media brands. The headline numbers can be misleading, so it’s important to separate the truth from the hype. In light of the fragmentation of models, platforms and user preferences, it’s more important than ever to have clarity in your goals when planning your subscription video strategy.
We’ve pulled together the key takeaways from the BFI and British Pathé, giving you access to what you need to know about launching or developing your own SVoD service.
